Press Release: Maryland State Board of Education to Meet August 27

The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting Tuesday, August 27 at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore.  The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the 7th floor Board Room.  Items on this month's agenda include the following:

9:50 a.m.   
MSA Science, School Progress Index
The State Board will hear a report on the 2013 results of the Maryland School Assessment for Science in fifth and eighth grade.  Federal law requires that all students be tested at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in science.  Biology results – part of Maryland's High School Assessment program – will be announced later.  The State Board also will hear a report on the School Progress Index, part of MSDE's revised accountability program.

10:35 a.m.  
Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC)

The State Board will hear an update on progress being made on the development of the PARCC exams, to be piloted in many Maryland schools this fall and scheduled to be fully implementedin the 2014-15 school year.  The PARCC exams will align with the new Common Core State Standards.

11 a.m.   
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

The State Board will hear an updateon STEM Innovation in Maryland schools by the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education.

11:45 a.m. 
Race to the Top Update

Board members will get the monthly update about progress being made on Maryland's 54 Race to the Top projects.

3 p.m.  
Board Meetings
The State Board will vote on meeting dates for its 2014 calendar.
