Press Release: Maryland Center For School Safety Coordinating Training In Wicomico County

Pilot Community Policing/Problem Solving Seminar

Baltimore, MD (July 19, 2016)

The Maryland Center for School Safety in collaboration with Maryland State Department of Education, Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions, Xero Associates, Inc., Wicomico County Public Schools, and the Wicomico County Sherriff’s Office this week are holding a Pilot Community Policing/Problem Solving training for School Resource Officers and School Administrators in Wicomico County. 

This new and innovative training curriculum was developed under a United States Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) grant. 

The training, concluding today, is allowing School Resource Officers and School Administrators to utilize new approaches and strategies utilizing Community Policing and Problem Solving Principles to build stronger relationships with each other and students to ensure our schools remain a safe and supportive learning environment. Nineteen School Resource Officers and 10 School Administrators are participating in this collaborative training.   

This innovative training is aligned with the President’s Task Force Report on 21st Century Policing deigned to strengthen community policing and trust among law enforcement officers and the communities they serve. 

Organizers plan to provide similar training to other Maryland school districts and law enforcement agencies as part of the pilot initiative.
