Three Summer Programs Launches Next Week

Three Maryland Summer Center Programs are set to get underway next week.  Ecosystems Education at Horn Point, the Center for Space Science, and the Center for Global Languages are three of six Maryland summer center programs planned for 2016.
                                                           
The 2016 Maryland Summer Centers Program continues a 49-year commitment at the State level to provide summer educational opportunities for Maryland’s gifted and talented students. The program, coordinated through the Maryland State Department of Education, in partnership with public and nonpublic agencies, provides Maryland’s diverse gifted and talented student population with advanced, rigorous, experiential learning opportunities that nurture these students’ talents and abilities within unique learning environments.

  • Ecosystems Education at Horn Point will allow students to work alongside scientists in one of the premier marine research facilities in the world, collecting and analyzing data pertaining to the management of the Chesapeake Bay’s natural resources. The residential program has two sections, one for students entering grades 6-8, the other for students entering grades 8-10.

Section A: July 10-16, for students entering grades 6-8

  • Center for Space Science allows students to be part of an engineering team that helps plan and design a simulated mission into space.  Students in grades 6-7 will work alongside NASA scientists and engineers at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, learning about the current applications of space technology.  The Center is hosted by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

  • The Center for Global Languages will offer students an in-depth language experience featuring hands-on, engaging cultural experiences.  Students in grades 4-6 may choose to study either Arabic or Chinese over the course of two weeks.

July 11-21 (Monday through Thursday only), 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
