Media Alert: Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Friday, June 27

The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its monthly meeting on Friday, June 27, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore.  The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the State Board room.  Items on this month’s agenda include the following: 

8:45 a.m.         Nutrition Standards
The State Board will be asked to approve new nutrition standards for all foods sold in schools.  The standards are based on based on both federal and State guidance on nutrition and would go into effect on July 1.

9:05 a.m.         Educator Evaluation
The State Board will consider publishing proposed regulations that would replace regulations set to sunset at the end of September.  Those regulations update current practice and include student growth provisions.

10:10 a.m.       Student Learning Objectives
The State Board of Education and the State Superintendent of Schools, and various education organizations will sign a memorandum of understanding to formalize a shared commitment to further strengthen educator evaluation through the Student Learning Objective (SLO) process.

11:15 a.m.       Executive Session
The Board will adjourn to closed session to deliberate legal appeals.

12:15 p.m.       State Board Retreat
The State Board is scheduled reconvene in a retreat for the afternoon.  The first segment of the retreat will focus on a topic that is subject to Executive Privilege and an internal management item.  This segment will be conducted in closed session. At 3:15 p.m. the session will be opened to the public for a discussion of a comprehensive review of regulations.
