Baltimore, MD (June 23, 2016)

The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 28, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. It will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m. 

The State Board also will hold an information session on Monday, June 27, beginning at 1 p.m. in conference room 6 on MSDE’s 8th floor.  Board members will hear reports on the SEED School and Maryland’s system of Career and Technology Education.

Items on the Tuesday agenda include the following: 

10:05 a.m.       Charter School Funding Study Reporting Requirement
The State Board is scheduled to act on a request authorizing the State Superintendent to withhold funds from local school systems that are not in compliance with a provision in the State’s Public Charter School Program Act designed to ensure adequate school funding.

10:20 a.m.       Superintendent of the Year
Allegany County’s Dr. David Cox, 2016 Maryland Superintendent of the Year, will be honored by the State Board.

11:20 a.m.       Mathematics Update
Board members will hear a report on educational programs, projects, and initiatives related to mathematics education in Maryland. 

2 p.m.              Lead Higher
The State Board will hear a report on the Lead Higher Initiative, aimed at closing equity gaps for lower income students and students of color in the most rigorous high school courses.

3:10 p.m.         Elementary and Secondary Schools Act (ESSA)
MSDE staff will update State Board members on the requirements for a new accountability system under ESSA, and the progress of the ESSA Accountability Workgroup.

4:20 p.m.         Commission on Assessments
The Commission on Assessments completed its work this month.  The State Board will hear a report on its findings and an overview of the timeline related to future State Board Action.
